On 21 December 2020, the new European Union’s Electronic Communications Code (EECC) will begin regulating a broad range of previously unregulated services as Electronic Communications Services (ECS). Among these newly regulated services are email, connected wearable devices, and many other Over The Top (OTT) applications, such as audio, video, and other streaming media content delivered over the Internet.
For the first time, providers of many of these ECS offerings will have to notify regulators in EU countries that they are providing services. Accordingly, OTT service providers will need to assess whether they fall within the definition of ECS and adapt their practices accordingly. OTTs that utilise telephone numbers may also have additional legal and regulatory obligations in the EU member states in which they operate.
In this webinar, we discussed how the EECC will begin regulating a broad range of previously unregulated OTT services. We also discussed how different OTT services may fit into it, and actions to consider taking to ensure your company’s ongoing compliance.
