IIC Singapore – TRPC Forum: The Challenge of Cyber Security
Date: 4 October 2016
Time: 3.00pm – 5.00pm
Venue: ICANN Singapore, South Beach Tower, 38 Beach Road #04-11 (S189767)

IIC Singapore, in cooperation with TRPC, is organizing a forum with IIC member ICANN

About the Forum:

In a world of connected devices, cyber security is an ever present concern at all levels: for individuals through a multitude of smart devices and online accounts, for commercial enterprises with stored data or making large online transactions, and for governments protecting the critical national information infrastructure. Increasingly governments are introducing security surveillance laws that go way beyond the legal right to investigate suspicious persons or transactions. Recently the Financial Times suggested that only Russia went as far as the new British Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015. But Malaysia joined the club on 1st August with the National Security Act. Common to these laws is the growing number of occasions when no court order or warrant is required to conduct online surveillance and the gathering of metadata.

At the industrial and enterprise level there has been a step increase in the use of bots and ransomware as cyber criminals become ever more professional. The examples only surprise by their growing scale and frequency. Defenses against attacks also become more professional, but the initiative is always likely to be with those dedicated to finding new ways into secure systems without detection. One way of looking at the issue is not to focus totally on defense, but to focus on the most critical areas and on how to react to an attack.

Our speakers will be addressing each of these concerns and strategies, at the level of policy making and regulation, at the level of the nature of the attacks and how they happen, and how to respond to minimize the consequences and recover quickly.

Speakers

Andy Haire, ex-Deputy Director of IDA

Clement Arul, Managing Director, Kaapagam Technologies Sdn Bhd, Kuala Lumpur

Lee Sult, CTO, Horangi Cyber Security, Singapore
