Access Alert | Bahrain Introduces Telecommunications Regulatory Sandbox

The Bahraini Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), has launched a new Innovation Licence to encourage the development and deployment of emerging technologies, with an emphasis on Wi-Fi 6, blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality/Extended Reality (AR/VR/XR), digital twin, and millimetre technology.

According to the TRA, the expected benefits of obtaining the Innovation License are to: 1) test and trial new wireless technologies and services in Bahrain; 2) have quick access to radio spectrum for such trials; and 3) build new partnerships between the regulatory authority and the industry.

The Innovation Licence is akin to a Regulatory Sandbox, highlighting Bahrain’s commitment and readiness to embrace new technologies and further develop the Kingdom’s telecommunications sector by leveraging the government’s support and existing digital infrastructure.

Application Requirements

The TRA has yet to specify the complete application requirements. However, we believe their publication to be imminent. It is also worth noting that the licence fee has been set at BHD 30 (USD 79).
General guidelines on TRA licence applications can be accessed here.

If you are interested in learning more about the Innovation License, require support with the application process or engaging the TRA, please contact Hussein Abul-Enein at [email protected] or Dana Ramadan at [email protected].
