Should the metaverse be built on a centralised or decentralised platform?

The Battle for Freedom and Control in the Future of Virtual Reality

On 6 April, Access Partnership hosted a webinar on the extent to which distributed technologies can enable the ‘decentralisation’ of the metaverse. Moderated by Director of the Fair Tech Institute Lim May-Ann, the event brought together three leading industry voices to discuss what form these technologies will enable the metaverse to take, the advantages and disadvantages of a decentralised approach, and how to build robust governance procedures.

Joining Lim May-Ann were:

  • Prof. Dr Naseem Naqvi, President of The British Blockchain Association
  • David Palmer, Blockchain Lead at Vodafone
  • Alisa Gus, CEO & Co-founder at WishKnish

The debate was built around a series of structured questions for the speakers to respond to, with audience members able to leave comments for interaction throughout the seminar before a closing Q&A. From security and data privacy to content moderation and financial transactions, the conversation covered all aspects of the metaverse’s potential implementation, as well as the potential for centralised platforms like Meta, Fortnite, and TikTok to dominate its future.
