Access Alert: Singapore launches new national AI strategy and regional LLM project

The government of Singapore recently rolled out its updated national AI strategy, outlining 15 courses of action to implement over the next three to five years. In addition to building up Singapore’s AI talent and capacity, the revised strategy also includes plans to regularly review AI policies and work with industry champions to identify sector use cases for AI, particularly in manufacturing, transport and logistics, financial services, and healthcare.

At the same time, the government has also launched a new National Large Language Model (LLM) programme. The two-year initiative, which has a budget of USD 52 million, includes the creation of a foundational model for the region and the development of LLM-enabled solutions for businesses through collaborations with industry partners.

As a start, Singapore and Indonesia have launched a collaborative project to create the SEA-LION LLM as a regional LLM model. This new initiative is aligned with the revised national strategy, where Singapore highlights the greater concerns and potential “inscrutability” when relying on LLMs.
