Last week the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union held the 2022 Digital Assembly. Among the topics discussed was the future of the internet: the metaverse and web3.
While Haksoo Ko, the president of the Korean taskforce, stated that research has not yet proven that interoperability will necessarily be beneficial in the development of the metaverse, there was much alignment between European policymakers and industry on the need for an open and interoperable metaverse. The discussion fed very much into a separate topic of the Assembly – Digital Commons, the development of European non-rivalry communities to support entrepreneurs, SMEs, start-ups in the development of open-source, open-data, and interoperable solutions.
Will European Digital Commons enable Europeans to compete with leaders in the field in the development of the metaverse? Only time will tell. Access Partnership is closely monitoring the developments in European digital regulation. For more information, contact Lydia Dettling.
