Economic Impact Report: Democratizing access to AI in Thailand with Google

Digital technologies can increase productivity, open new markets, create job opportunities, and enhance global competitiveness, propelling economic growth for countries. The Digital Thailand Plan was laid out to support digitization with the long-term vision of fully leveraging digital technologies to facilitate the country’s economic and social development.[1]

Our study found that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significant potential to accelerate Thailand’s progress toward achieving more productive economic growth. It creates more high-value jobs, streamlines operations, and boosts productivity across numerous industries. The adoption of AI can assist Thailand in developing a robust digital economy, unlocking at least THB 2.6 trillion in economic benefits for businesses in 2030.

Accelerating the adoption of AI would require the right enablers, such as the proper infrastructure, skills, and a safe online environment. Digital skills training can help Thailand build a digitally skilled workforce necessary to fully harness the opportunities presented by AI. Furthermore, safeguarding individuals and organizations from cyber threats is of paramount importance as economic activities increasingly transition online. This study reveals that THB 1.0 trillion of value can be generated in 2030 by narrowing Thailand’s digital talent gap through training. In addition, THB 726 billion of cybercrime-related costs to businesses and individuals can be mitigated in the same year through implementing cybersecurity tools and training programs.

Google is helping Thailand to build its digital future. Through its initiatives, Google is facilitating the application of AI in Thailand’s society, bridging the digital skills gap, and ensuring a safer online environment. For instance, initiatives like Google’s AI for Social Good support AI adoption in healthcare, while the Google Career Certificates provide upskilling opportunities for citizens.[2]

Google is already delivering significant benefits to Thai businesses and households by increasing revenues for businesses and providing access to easy-to-use and secure tools for consumers. In 2022, Google’s AI-powered products and solutions enabled businesses in the country to unlock more than THB 150 billion in economic activity and supported over 250,000 jobs in the economy. An additional THB 453 billion in economic benefits were also gained by Thai households in 2022.
