About the Forum:

Privacy rules beyond borders
The role of GDPR, CBPR and other international frameworks in aligning privacy rules across borders

In an effort to enhance privacy and align rules across borders, new international privacy frameworks are emerging. Whether it is the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), APEC’s Cross Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) or non-binding international standards such as ISO, new multilateral models are designed to make it easier for organisations to comply with privacy rules wherever they do business. But do they achieve this objective? While the benefits of a consistent international approach are clear, these new models raise new challenges, from questions over application and enforceability across borders to alignment challenges for nations that have their own, often differing, national privacy regulations.

In this session, organised by the International Institute of Communications, we will navigate the issues arising from these new multilateral frameworks and discuss what they mean for businesses and policy makers in APAC, including:

  1. What does GDPR mean for companies in Singapore?
  2. How does Singapore’s PDPA hold-up to GDPR and CBPR?
  3. What is the role of the APEC CBPR and how does it affect companies in Singapore?
  4. What is the role of international standards like ISO 27001 in aligning privacy compliance across borders?
  5. What is the future direction of travel for multi-lateral privacy rules?
