About the Forum:

Balancing Privacy with Opportunity in Hong Kong and the Asia Pacific Region

As data sources proliferate, the issue of consent is becoming increasingly contentious and giving rise to debates about how data privacy regulations should adapt. At the same time, businesses are benefitting from new types of technology that generate deeper insights by analyzing patterns to generate predictions; with more data being collected, however, how do we ensure the appropriate management of personal data while still enabling robust anti-money laundering practices to be effective? In this forum, co-organised by TRPC and Refinitiv, we will discuss:

  • How might international frameworks such as GDPR affect or influence Hong Kong’s own data protection regulations? What sort of regulations might be needed going forward?
  • Given Hong Kong’s position as a financial services hub, how can we ensure that consent provisions within privacy laws do not undermine the fight against financial crime?
  • As policymakers around the world consider the privacy implications of new technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, what is the optimal balance between privacy and the potential benefits that these new technologies bring?

This event follows a series of forums led by TRPC and its partners  that brought experts together to discuss where GDPR and APEC’s Cross Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) align and differ; to raise nascent issues in terms of compliance and extra-jurisdictional enforcement; the opportunities and challenges for Thailand as a draft privacy bill is progressed; and, the privacy implications of Artificial Intelligence.
