Access Alert | Launch of Metaverse Standards Forum

Yesterday the Metaverse Standards Forum was launched. As we discussed previously in our article titled  “How can we protect those participating in an interoperable metaverse?” interoperability is crucial to the successful adoption of the metaverse. In our article we concluded that “to facilitate the open, interoperable, and decentralised nature of the metaverse, minimum common standards which ensure user and data security and integrity must be agreed upon by all actors (developers of technologies, experts, academics and government regulators.)”

Multiple industry leaders have stated that the potential of the metaverse will be best realised if it is built on a foundation of open standards. Building an open and inclusive metaverse at pervasive scale will demand a constellation of open interoperability standards.

Access Partnership welcome the establishment of The Metaverse Standards Forum, which provides a platform for cooperation between standards organisations and companies to foster the development of interoperability standards. The Forum will not create standards itself but will coordinate requirements and resources to foster the creation and evolution of standards within organisations working in relevant domains. Founding members of the Metaverse Standards Forum include Adobe, Meta, Microsoft and Epic Games amongst others. Notable absentees include Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Roblox and Samsung.

In September, Access Partnership’s Metaverse Policy Lab will be hosting a dialogue titled “Metaverse Dialogue: Interoperability and the Future of the Metaverse” which is dedicated solely to discussing interoperability and what best practice would look like.  Please click here to register.
