Tech Policy Trends 2023 | US-China relations

Since taking office, the Biden Administration has shown little evidence of deviating from the era of ‘strategic competition’ with China initiated by Donald Trump. As America edges closer to its next presidential election, the relationship between the world’s two biggest economies will be at the forefront of the political landscape in both countries, with major implications for the global technology sector.

Access Partnership’s Tech Policy Trends report has identified US-China relations as one of the key areas to watch over the next 12 months. The US Department of Commerce has already imposed some of the strictest export controls on the sale of advanced computing semiconductor chips and chipmaking equipment in over a decade, but 2023 is the year in which the impact of those controls will really be felt – not just in Washington and Beijing, but in Seoul, Sydney, and beyond.

Which countries’ economies are most likely to be impacted by the fallout of any further escalation in tensions? What sectors are most exposed? How will strategic partnerships shape the outcome on both sides? Who stands to gain?

As industry disruptors with a global presence, Access Partnership’s experts in government relations, policy analysis, and compliance and licensing can provide a detailed insight into the critical debates across the technology sector. Our regional understanding allows us to consider the implications of US-China tensions at both the macro and micro level, taking into account Chinese investment in digital connectivity across Latin America and Africa and the US’s increased regional engagement as it seeks to re-establish itself as a strategic leader on the global stage.

With many countries at risk of being caught in a zero-sum game, the ripples of volatility from the world’s most important geopolitical relationship raise questions for every major technology sector. Access Partnership’s Tech Policy Trends report has the answers.
