Enhancing mobility options in Japan

The Opportunity

Access Partnership set out to assess the economic impact of enhancing mobility in Japan, responding to a clear gap in the existing evidence base. With an aging population and evolving transportation needs, we sought data-driven insights to inform policy discussions and highlight the potential benefits of innovative mobility solutions.

The Solution

We partnered with the International University of Japan’s Centre for Global Communications (GLOCOM) to conduct an economic study on enhancing mobility in Japan. The study identified that targeted mobility innovations, such as ridesharing, micro-mobility, and autonomous vehicles, could unlock up to JPY 5.8 trillion in annual economic value. The findings underscored the need for regulatory reforms to enable the integration of new mobility services into Japan’s transportation ecosystem.

The Impact

  • Identified that 40% of surveyed businesses would benefit from accessible transport
  • Calculated USD 40 billion in potential economic value
  • Created structured frameworks for testing and scaling mobility innovations
