Access Alert: Navigating new horizons in European tech policy

On 14 May, Access Partnership held a private EU briefing in Brussels with industry leaders and EU policymakers. The session aimed to harmonise and implement digital regulations to boost innovation and enhance global competitiveness.

Key topics included:

  • Supporting innovation consistently and coherently across the single market to increase global competitiveness.
  • Balancing digital resilience with the green transition with driving economic growth through continued digital transformation.
  • Emphasising defence policy developments that would have been unthinkable in previous political climates.
  • Strengthening cybersecurity frameworks while confronting privacy concerns and geopolitical constraints with a coordinating mechanism for digital regulations.

Participants discussed a controversial new coordination mechanism for digital regulations and the potential impact of a rightward shift in the European Parliament on future policies.

The conversation also highlighted the need for balanced regulation that fosters innovation with continuous monitoring of political developments in defence, climate policy, and ICT standardisation amid fears of regulatory overreach stifling progress.

Overall, the session underscored the necessity of collaboration between industry and policymakers to tackle challenges and seize opportunities in European tech policy. Access Partnership’s Brussels briefings facilitate ongoing engagement between industry leaders and EU policymakers.
