Saudi Arabia’s Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) recently published a consultation for its forthcoming Space Radiocommunication Spectrum Outlook. Continuing with the implementation of the actions set out to modernise the Kingdom’s regulatory framework for satellite and space services, the CST is seeking industry and interested stakeholders’ opinions and suggestions to improve its spectrum management. In particular, this Outlook describes present and future actions to ensure the fit-for-purpose licensing and allocation of the radio spectrum management process for space radiocommunication services.
Within this context, the document presents the current status of the space radiocommunication spectrum and identifies actual and future demand for spectrum, aiming to ensure industry’s needs are heard and included in the CST’s future plans. The Space Radiocommunication Spectrum Outlook also aims to enable the materialisation of the benefits of spectrum as a scarce national resource for economic and social well-being.
Global trends in satellite and space solutions and applications are considered in the document presented for consultation, including communications, Internet of Things (IoT), non-terrestrial and hybrid solutions, Direct-to-Device applications (D2D), space debris management, and earth observation, among others. A section regarding funding of space research and development and human capital is also included.
Interested parties have until 10 September 2023 to submit their contributions and express their inputs regarding spectrum needs, as well as other actions required to enable the space radiocommunications applications and services and ensure the availability of the required spectrum resources.
