Access Alert: UK Government Announces £3.5M Funding Opportunity for Satellite Connectivity Projects

Introduction

The UK Space Agency (UKSA) has launched a funding call of up to £3.5 million aimed at advancing satellite connectivity in some of the most remote regions of the UK. This initiative is part of the Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems (ARTES) programme and is designed to bridge the digital divide by introducing innovative hybrid connectivity solutions.

Funding for Satellite Connectivity Projects

In collaboration with the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology (DSIT) and the European Space Agency (ESA), the UKSA seeks to fund three key projects that will deliver satellite services to areas lacking reliable broadband access. These include:

  • Gigabit-capable Internet via Mobile Terminals: This project will deploy mobile terminals on vehicles to provide high-speed internet in rural and remote locations, benefiting local authorities, emergency services, farmers, and tourism-related businesses.
  • Hybrid Networks in Shetland and Northern Ireland: One project will focus on a Site of Special Scientific Interest on Papa Stour Island in Shetland, while another will target Rathlin Island in Northern Ireland. Both areas currently lack access to traditional broadband networks.

These initiatives are designed to enhance digital infrastructure, improving connectivity for local businesses and remote populations, while stimulating economic growth.

Testbeds for the Next Generation of Connectivity

These testbed projects are crucial for shaping the future of connectivity. By combining satellite technology and mobile networks, they aim to provide reliable and fast communication systems in areas where traditional network infrastructure is unavailable. The projects will use both Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Geostationary (GEO) satellite signals to ensure consistent and high-speed connectivity.

Broader Impact

The UK Government envisions that these satellite solutions will support several key sectors, including agriculture, energy, emergency services, and local businesses. The expansion of connectivity will enable the growth of Internet of Things (IoT) applications, which are expected to have a significant economic impact.

These projects are aligned with ongoing discussions on the potential of network convergence and the rise of direct-to-device (D2D) services. By integrating satellite into existing mobile coverage, operators can enhance connectivity in hard-to-reach areas.

The Future of Connectivity

The UK Space Agency’s £3.5 million funding initiative represents a significant opportunity to advance connectivity in some of the UK’s most remote areas. Access Partnership offers comprehensive support to navigate the funding application process, establish strategic partnerships, and align projects with government priorities, ensuring the highest likelihood of success.
