Launch of the ADB study on reaping the benefits of Industry 4.0 in Asia

On Friday, May 21, together with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), AlphaBeta launched the study “Reaping the benefits of Industry 4.0 through skills development in high-growth industries in Southeast Asia”, at a webinar which included panellists from SkillsFuture Singapore and the World Economic Forum.

Dr Fraser Thompson and Ms Genevieve Lim from AlphaBeta shared key findings from the study, which focused on eight industry sectors across Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam. These findings touched on the readiness of industry for adopting Industry 4.0 technologies, potential implications for jobs and skills (including gender-specific impacts), how prepared training institutes are in equipping workers with these skills, and policy recommendations.

Opening remarks for this event was shared by Ramesh Subramaniam, Director General of the Southeast Asia Department in ADB. The event was also attended by a number of prominent stakeholders from government, industry and training sectors, and there was a rich discussion around the challenges and opportunities faced by Southeast Asian countries in its Industry 4.0 journey, particularly with COVID-19 accelerating some of these, and the policy interventions needed for the right level of workforce upskilling to take place.
