Growth in internet penetration has not translated into faster economic growth in many emerging economies. For example, since 2013, Kenya’s internet penetration has grown by 10.9 percent annually, but real GDP has only increased by 5.6 percent annually. A significant reason for this is that the potential of digitalization remains untapped. In our recent study on the Digital Sprinters, we estimated that by 2030 digital transformation could unlock US$74 billion in economic impact in Kenya through policies that enable the full utilisation of digital technologies.
