Taiwan’s economic future will depend on embracing artificial intelligence (AI) to boost productivity and diversify growth across all sectors. It could transform Taiwan from a semiconductor powerhouse into a thriving diversified economy, with AI lifting productivity across sectors. A key factor to this success is Taiwan’s recognition of AI as a national priority evidenced by its AI Action Plan, which involves a budget allocation of up to TWD 10 billion for the development of Taiwan’s AI industry.
Our study finds that there is a considerable AI opportunity for Taiwan. With the right support in place, TWD 3.2 trillion (USD 101.3 billion) of economic benefits are expected for businesses in Taiwan in 2030 if AI-powered products and solutions are adopted. This is equivalent to over 13% of Taiwan’s current GDP.
Apart from their myriad benefits, developments in AI technology and increasing digitalization are also leading to growing cyberthreats. For instance, AI tools can be used to write malicious code, automate attacks, and generate deep fakes. Taiwan can best counter these emerging threats with accelerated and strategic adoption of AI tools targeted towards enhancing cybersecurity. Partnering with businesses at the forefront of AI-enabled cybersecurity is another important step to ensure digital safety. This study reveals that TWD 957.5 billion (USD 30.7 billion) of cybercrime losses can be prevented for Taiwan in 2030 if businesses deploy AI-powered cybersecurity capabilities.
