Var Shankar weighs in on regulation and the responsible deployment of AI
In the latest episode of Access Partnership’s Global Policy Review podcast, host Dana Poponete is joined by Var Shankar, Director of Policy at the Responsible AI Institute, to explore the challenges and opportunities of AI regulation.
In a conversation ranging from AI literacy and the impact of large language models on public discourse to the possibility of futureproofing legislation for further developments, Var discusses whether it is too early to begin regulating AI or if policymakers are already too slow to act.
Outlining six key content-specific considerations for responsible deployment, Var lists existing frameworks that provide good examples to follow in areas such as automated lending and healthcare, as well as broader issues that should be addressed to ensure advanced systems can be successfully integrated into wider society. He also explains how the Responsible AI Institute is seeking to promote interdisciplinary and international cooperation through certification programmes and soft law.
To expand these debates, Access Partnership’s AI Policy Lab will host a webinar on responsible AI later this month. Join us on 16 May, where a panel of industry experts will discuss how to develop this concept from theory into practice for the betterment of communities, businesses, and governments alike.
