Korean entertainment groups like Blackpink and BTS have continually taken the world by storm, while Android revolutionized mobile access for millions of Koreans. But these are just two highlights of a much larger story – a story of Google’s profound impact on Korea’s economy, innovation, and global connectivity. As Google commemorates two decades in Korea, a new report by Access Partnership measures the company’s contribution to the nation’s digital transformation over the past 20 years.
From revolutionizing information access through Google Search to empowering businesses with Google Ads and Cloud solutions, Google’s AI-powered tools have reshaped how Korean businesses grow, and how Koreans live and work. The report quantifies this influence, revealing that Google’s presence has helped provide USD 107 billion (KRW 131 trillion[1]) of economic activity for businesses from 2004 to 2023. In this period, this economic engine has also supported 552,000 jobs by helping businesses expand through their use of Google Search, Google Ads, Google AdSense, Google Cloud, and Android.[2]

Google has also been bridging Korea to the world for years. The introduction of Android in 2008 proved pivotal, democratizing smartphone access for 25 million more Koreans and adding USD 120 billion (KRW 136 trillion) in economic value to Korea from 2008 to 2023. YouTube has played a pivotal role in enabling thousands of Korean creators to go global and monetize their interests, skills and passions by sharing their content with users worldwide. Furthermore, two of the top 10 most subscribed official artist channels globally belong to Korean artists (Blackpink and BTS), and a remarkable 30% of watch time on Korean YouTube channels comes from international viewers.[3]
Looking ahead, artificial intelligence (AI) presents a transformative opportunity, and Korea is well-positioned to lead. With its strong semiconductor industry, early adoption of AI strategies, and thriving research ecosystem, Korea has all the elements for significant AI-driven growth. The report projects that with the right support in place, USD 181 billion (KRW 236 trillion) of economic benefits are expected for businesses in Korea in 2030 if AI-powered products and solutions are adopted. Google is committed to partnering with Korea in this AI journey, providing tools, training, and infrastructure to maximize this potential.

Google’s commitment to Korea’s AI future is evident in its various initiatives, including its Machine Learning Bootcamp and Startups program, AI Startup School, and Google for Startups Accelerator: AI First. To help young Koreans improve their digital skills competitiveness, Google is collaborating with the Ministry of Science and ICT to provide scholarships for Koreans aged 20-30 to undertake Google Career Certificates at no cost.[4] Furthermore, Google’s investments in cybersecurity and cloud infrastructure ensure a robust and secure digital environment for Korea’s continued growth.
As Google and Korea reflect on two decades of collaboration and look towards the next 20 years and more, this report underscores the significant impact of their partnership. The future holds immense potential, with AI poised to redefine industries and drive further innovation. Together, Google and Korea are well-equipped to navigate this exciting new era, shaping a future where technology continues to empower Koreans and transform lives.
