Beyond the Screen: The Economic Impact of Roblox in Indonesia

Indonesia’s gaming sector is experiencing rapid growth. In 2024, the gaming market in Indonesia grew by 12.1% year-on-year, outpacing the global average of 2.1%. Roblox, a creator-driven platform that empowers individuals to create and design their digital experiences, has become an important part of that story.

This economic impact, facilitated by Roblox, shows up in the gross domestic product (GDP) and jobs. Through Roblox’s Developer Exchange Program (which lets creators cash out what they earn from their experiences), Indonesian creators are turning game development into viable small businesses — and contributing to national output.^[1] Between 2019 and 2024, actual payouts from Roblox’s Developer Exchange Program contributed an estimated USD 8.2 million (around IDR 126.7 billion) to Indonesia’s GDP. The economic activity linked to Roblox is estimated to have supported 310 jobs in 2024. Over the five-year period, this translates to compound annual growth rates (CAGR) of 307% for GDP and 298% for job impact, underscoring Roblox’s rapidly growing impact on the local economy.

Roblox is also creating export value. Indonesian creators are not limited to local audiences; they’re selling to the world. Based on an Access Partnership 2025 survey, 37% of players of Indonesian-made Roblox experiences are located outside Indonesia — and 31% of Indonesian creators’ earnings come from overseas. The largest export markets by earnings include the United States, Japan, and Malaysia.

Beyond these direct economic effects, Roblox is helping to build Indonesia’s future digital workforce. The platform lowers barriers to entry for creation by giving young creators access to easy-to-use tools and a large library of resources. Access Partnership survey revealed that many Roblox creators in Indonesia are self-taught (77% of the sample) and are gaining skills in game design (67%), problem-solving (51%) and teamwork or collaboration (50%) — skills that are relevant outside of gaming as well.
